End of the boating season: how to prepare your boat for winter

When the boating season comes to an end and temperatures begin to drop, it’s important to think about winterising your boat. Proper preparation prevents damage from frost, moisture or inactivity, and ensures that you can enjoy carefree sailing again in the spring.

1. Protect your engine and systems from frost

The engine is the heart of your boat, and therefore the first priority for winter maintenance. Check whether the cooling system contains enough antifreeze and replace it if necessary. Don’t forget to flush the cooling circuit thoroughly, especially on outboard engines or generators.

It’s also important to empty all water systems: drinking water tanks, pipes, showers, and toilets. Standing water can freeze and burst pipes. Use marine antifreeze to protect any remaining water.

Tip: If in doubt, have a certified maintenance company check that all systems are properly protected against frost. A small investment that can prevent major repair costs later.

2. Fuel, batteries and electrical systems

Keep fuel tanks full to reduce condensation. Add a fuel stabiliser to prevent bacterial growth in diesel.

Disconnect batteries and store them in a dry, frost-free place. Charge them regularly or use a trickle charger. Also check that fuses and electrical connections are clean and dry.

3. Clean and ventilate your boat

Moisture is your boat’s worst enemy in winter. A thorough cleaning prevents mould and mildew. Make sure cushions, curtains, and flooring are completely dry and store them indoors.

Ensure proper ventilation on board, use moisture absorbers or leave a vent slightly open to prevent condensation and musty odours.

4. Protect the deck and hull

Snow and ice can add significant weight to your deck. Make sure winter covers or tarps are tightly secured so meltwater can drain away.
Check drainage holes regularly to avoid blockages.

If your boat is stored on land, inspect supports and stands for stability. If kept in the water, monitor through-hulls and valves to ensure they remain ice-free.

5. Winter storage: inside or outside?

Both options have pros and cons.

Indoor storage offers maximum protection from frost, moisture, and dirt,  ideal for keeping your boat in top condition.
Outdoor wintering is also possible but requires extra attention to antifreeze, ventilation, and regular inspection. Ensure good winter covers and, if necessary, an ice prevention device.

6. Final inspection

Before laying up your boat for the season, go through one final checklist:

  • Engine and fuel system checked?

  • Water and drainage systems emptied?

  • Batteries disconnected?

  • Deck and hull cleaned?

  • Winter cover properly secured?

A few extra minutes of inspection can make the difference between a smooth spring launch and costly repairs. A boat is more than a possession, it’s a source of freedom and relaxation. With proper winter preparation, it will stay that way. Whether you do the work yourself or leave it to professionals, make sure your boat gets through the winter safely.
