FAQ
Welcome to Indumar’s FAQ page, where you’ll quickly find answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Is a pleasure craft insurance policy mandatory?
No, in Belgium and the Netherlands, this insurance is not mandatory for all vessels. However, in many marinas, liability insurance (third-party liability) is required in order to enter the harbour.
Do I need a boating licence?
We always follow the legal requirements of the country whose flag your vessel sails under, as well as those of the waters where you are navigating. However, it is highly recommended to hold a boating licence, even when it is not legally required. Knowing the navigation rules well is essential to correctly assess risks and to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
What coverages can I include in my pleasure craft insurance policy?
Liability
Hull
Contents: up to 10% of the boat’s value (can be extended with an additional premium).
Personal accident insurance for passengers
Towing costs
Rescue and recovery
Legal assistance
Charter
Is damage caused by storm, fire or theft covered?
Yes, provided you have hull coverage.
Can I insure my boat if I live on it?
No, unfortunately we cannot insure houseboats.
What happens in case of damage to third parties or bodily injury?
The liability coverage compensates this damage without any deductible.
Are my dinghy or trailer also insured?
Yes, you can insure these, but you must report them. Both are automatically covered up to a value of €5,000. For higher values, an additional premium will be charged. Please note: the trailer is only covered when not being towed. You must still insure the trailer under the third-party liability insurance of the towing vehicle.
Is damage to my boat during transport covered?
Yes, damage to your boat during transport on public roads within the chosen navigation area is covered.
What are exclusions or limitations?
The exclusions in our policies are clearly and transparently stated in our policy terms and conditions. If you have specific questions about this, you can always contact us. We will be happy to provide you with additional information.
Does there exist a specific insurance for my boat that is laid up?
No, what we do offer is a discount on the policy combined with a “laid-up clause.” It is often forgotten that a boat can still suffer damage while not in use. That’s why we recommend keeping your insurance active, even when your vessel is temporarily out of the water or not being used.
Can I participate in competitions?
- Sailboats may participate in regattas, provided that these take place in the North Sea or on the Lower Scheldt. Participation in a regatta on the Mediterranean Sea is possible upon request.
- Motorboats are not allowed to take part in speed races; this is explicitly excluded in our policy terms and conditions.
How much does a boat insurance policy cost on average?
There is no single answer to this question, as the premium depends on several factors. That’s why we ask you to complete your quote request via our website. We will then make sure you receive a personalised offer as soon as possible, so you immediately know the correct price and won’t face any surprises.
Are we allowed to rent out the boat?
Yes, provided that you inform us immediately. In that case, we include a charter clause in your policy. Due to the higher risk, an additional premium will be charged. However, bareboat chartering is excluded in our policy terms and conditions.
Is there a deductible or excess in my policy?
The deductible, also known as the excess or the franchise, applies only within the Hull coverage. The amount of this deductible can be found in the special terms and conditions of your policy.
